On October 9, 2000, Their Majesties King Juan Carlos I and Queen Sofía of Spain inaugurated the 2000/2001 academic year at the University of Extremadura. The San Francisco Cultural Complex in Cáceres hosted the event. The inaugural lecture, "Four Decades of Microelectronics," was delivered by Professor Francisco Duque Carrillo of the University of Extremadura.
